Nobody Loses on Price

We scored 4,587 recorded objection attempts from 256 salespeople at 39 home services and auto retail companies. The objections that beat them were not the aggressive ones. They were the polite ones.

Finding 01: the polite question beats the angry one

3,323 attempts carried a labeled objection. Failure means the attempt scored below 70 on a fixed 0 to 100 rubric. Two questions in this table are both about price. One fails 29.1% of the time, the other 17.1%. That is a 1.7x gap between a customer who asks quietly and a customer who names a competitor.

Weighted by attempts, objections that give the rep nothing to work with failed 23.0% of the time (1,996 attempts). Objections that hand the rep a number failed 19.1% (1,327 attempts). Read that as a tendency, not a law: the gap is 3.9 points, and "It's too expensive" runs against it.

A number is something a rep can answer. A polite question is a door closing slowly, and most reps say thank you and let it close. The reps in this sample were trained to fight. Nobody trained them for the customer who does not fight back.
